Denver police will fire guns downtown Sunday to test gunshot detection system

September 08, 2020

Denver police will fire guns in Capitol Hill, Civic Center and downtown Sunday evening to calibrate the city’s gunshot detection system.

The shooting will take place between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. at nine different locations, Denver police said in a statement. A bullet trap will be used to ensure there is no danger to the public, police said.

The gunshot detection system, ShotSpotter, uses audio sensors to detect gunfire and notifies first responders of the shots and location. The system has been in place in Denver since 2015 and was expanded in 2019.
